Silage Wagons

Hazards:

• Roll-over or sliding on steep/uneven terrain

• Crushing between wagon and tractor or structures

• Entanglement in moving parts

• Overloading causing instability or mechanical failure

• Poor visibility leading to collisions (e.g. with stock, people, obstacles)

• Mechanical failure (e.g. hitch, hydraulics, tyres)
  
  

Risk Controls:

Terrain and Roll-over/Sliding:

• Avoid using silage wagons on steep or wet slopes

• Use larger 4WD tractors, and wagons with good tyre grip and load for appropriate weight distribution

• Assess paddock conditions before entry – delay operation in wet or unstable areas or find an alternate location

• Plan safe travel routes and entry/exit points - always have a run-out planned

• Reduce travel speed on slopes or turns

Operational Safety:

• Only trained and competent operators to use tractors and wagons

• Keep people and animals well clear during operation

• Never ride on the wagon

• Shut down engine and remove key before clearing blockages or performing maintenance

• Regularly inspect tyres, brakes, hydraulic hoses, and hitching equipment
